Islamabad Chapter
The alumni event history covers a period between June 2004 to March 2005 during which 12 main events were held through a collaborative effort of the Alumni Association and the British Council, Islamabad. One aspect of this, however, needs to be pointed out here, i.e. the type of events were deliberately kept to be as diversified as possible, so as to increase the membership of the Alumni and keep the interest of the Alumni Members alive.

Event: Introduction of Community Policing in Islamabad Police
Venue: Marriott Hotel, Islamabad
Highlights:British Council provided partial funding for this event. It was a well attended event with all major donors being present total of 80-100 participants. It received most media coverage. The event was organized by SSP Ehsan Sadiq. IG Police, Islamabad, The Saudi Ambassador, The Norwegian Ambassador and the donors attended this event. The chief guest was Mr. Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao.

Event: Seminar on Protection of Human Rights - Responsibility of Whom
Venue: Marriott Hotel Islamabad
Highlights: The welcoming addresses were made by Andrew Picken and Fatima Moin of British Council; and Saif-Ur-Rehman, the President of BAAP. The chief guest was Shahzad Waseem, The Minister of State-Interior. Alumni representing different walks of life such as human rights, media, government, law and judiciary were invited to speak and participate in the discussion which ensued. Jehangir Durrani of UNHCR started the discussion speaking about the general state of Human Rights in Pakistan and indicated that it was the responsibility of all. This was followed by Barrister Masroor Shah’s talk on the role of the judiciary. The most interesting and lively talk was given by Mr Z U Khan, the author of the controversial Police Reforms 2002. Media was represented by Mr Matiullah Jan of Inter-news and this event received good media coverage.

British Council provided the entire funding of this event.

Event: Gala Dinner
Venue: Marriott Hotel Islamabad
Highlights: The event was organised as a part of an ongoing initiative by the British Council to promote alumni social activities in Pakistan. Dr. Tom Craig-Cameron, Country Director British Council, Saifur Rehman, president of the British Alumni Association of Pakistan (BAAP) Islamabad Chapter, and a large number of scholars and members of the BC and BAAP were present. Dr. Tom then welcomed the scholars. Saifur Rehman, president of the British Alumni Association of Pakistan, spoke about recent activities and achievements of the association and how the association was evolving in order to enhance liaison with scholars. Gulbahar Bano with her ghazals, Raees Ahmad with his violin and Salman with the flute kept the audience entertained. Farooq Qaiser compeered in his typical satirical style, which kept the audience engaged in between performances.

Event: VC Event, (Global Climate Change)
Venue: VC Room BC Islamabad
Highlights: Through the VC participants benefited from the up to date information provided to them about recent Climatic changes throughout the world and its impact on humanity. Dr Tarling also showed some interesting photos of the Antarctica where he had visited recently in connection with his work. The session was designed in such a way that live images were shown in the conference. The audience were very impressed by the new technology and enjoyed the discussion greatly. It provided the audience an opportunity to interact with more people and they were able to share their views with larger audience, both within Pakistan and from the UK and got to know about the perceptions of other people on a topic of common interest. The facilitator managed the VC session very well in a very friendly manner. During the breakout sessions few of the guests shared their views with the audience on other related issues to Climate Change such as the Tsunami, depletion of the Ozone layer was also discussed and its impact on life.
This event was one of the Café Scientific for which funds were provided by the science team in British Council Manchester. It was British Council’s initiative.

Event: Chevening Get Together
Venue: British High Commission
Highlights: Chevening Alumni members for the year 2004/05 who had just returned after completing their studies were invited by the British High Commission to share their views and experiences with the British High Commissioner. For this purpose a small tea reception was organised by the British High Commission. It was attended by GFS Team, British High Commissioner and his team.
Candidates came from Lahore and British Council Peshawar. This event was organised at the request of British High Commission.

Event: Police Dinner, South Yorkshire Police
Venue: Marriott Hotel, Islamabad
Highlights: Director British Council Pakistan and the Programmes Team hosted a dinner reception at the Marriot Hotel for police delegation from South Yorkshire Police. Selected guests from the same police & judiciary were present on this occasion. Discussions involved one to one differences in the pattern of work between the police of Pakistan and UK. Useful information was also exchanged among leading alumni members and the Yorkshire police members.

Event: CWT Dinner
Venue: Director Pakistan Residence
Highlights: CWT Alumni dinner was held at Tom's Residence. Dr Crawley who flew in to conduct interviews of the applicants who had applied for the CWT 2005/06 programme was also present. It was an informal meeting of the CWT Alumni members, and an ideal occasion for networking.
25 invites were sent out of which only 15 people attended the event.

Event: Musical Evening
Highlights: A musical evening was arranged by BAA for its members. Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan performed at the event which was attended by 60 British alumni members.

Event: Seminar on "SME Development" (Myths & Realities)
Highlights: British Council Lahore in collaboration with Government College University (GCU) Lahore, SMEDA, Union Bank, and Lahore Chapter of British Alumni Association (BAA), organised a short seminar on "SME Development" (Myths & Realities) at GCU. The event is sponsored by Government College University, Lahore.
The overall aim of the seminar is to discuss the demands from the SME sector of public and private facilitating institutions, and vice versa, and evaluate their merits.
Speakers explored policy setting, financial assistance, academic/research support and entrepreneurial supporting networks. The seminar was attended by 60 Alumni.

Event: Press Conference
Highlights: A press conference was held in collaboration with the Escorts Foundation and Lahore Chapter of British Alumni Association to commemorate the Foundation on winning the International Ashden Awards for renewable energy for 2004. The press conference was conducted by Amna Qureshy (last year's DFID scholarship winner for LSE) of British Alumni Association,
The awards acknowledge outstanding renewable energy projects in the developing world and the UK. Amna & her colleague from Escorts Foundation were presented with the award plus £30K for their work in Changa Manga Forest area near Lahore. Prince Charles, David Attenborough and John Humphrys were connected to the ceremonies in the UK.

Event: Seminar on “Domestic Violence & Minoritisation"
Highlights: A short seminar on “Domestic Violence & Minoritisation: Supporting Women To Independence” by Erica Burman Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies, Department of Psychology and Speech Pathology from the Manchester Metropolitan University was held at the Punjab University. The event was jointly organised by the British Alumni Association and Department of Psychology, Punjab University. Around 200 participants attended the seminar.

Event: Global Conference:- Eye to Eye
Highlights: Eye to Eye:- The global conference on the future of cultural relations, organised by the British Council, UK and Counterpoint. Ms Farah Zia , British alumni member attended the conference. She was nominated by the British Alumni Association (BAA) to attend this conference in the UK.

Highlights: A special lecture on the themes of Environmental Impacts of Tsunami was jointly organised by BAA & Department of Environmental Sciences, Lahore College for Women University. Around 250 guests attended the lecture.

Event: Video Conferencing session on ‘Global Climate Change’
Highlights: A video conferencing session on Global Climate Change was held in collaboration with the British Alumni Association under the BC cafe scientific programme. The resource person from UK was Dr Geraint Tarling, British Antarctic Survey from Cambridge. 30 Alumni who attended the session which was also covered by GEO.

Event: Annual Dinner & Musical Evening
Highlights: An annual British Alumni dinner was held in collaboration with the British Alumni Association. Speeches, dinner and a performance by Ustad Hamid Ali Khan comprised the event. About 300 people (alumni along with spouses) attended. Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) was the venue. Dr Bushra Mateen VC of LCW is the president of the Lahore Chapter of British Alumni Association. Simon Buttt, Deputy British High Commissioner, also participated. He was very pleased with the event and praised BC in his speech. We received extremely positive feedback from participants. There was a visible enthusiasm in participants to become members of the association. The event attracted a huge amount of print and electronic media coverage.

Event: Lecture on ‘The development discipline landscape’
Highlights: A short lecture on ‘The Development Discipline Landscape: A Conceptual Exploration through Participation and Development Management’ by Dr Naeem Khalid a development academic and consultant from the UK was held at Lahore College for Women University. 45 alumni attended the seminar.
